Annuals
ALL AMERICA SELECTION WINNERS

Every year All-America Selections has a network of independent judges that test
a variety of new annuals and vegetables to determine the best quality. From these submissions, the best of the best are chosen as All-America Selection Winners.

From these winners, Wallitsch Garden Center carefully selects only the plants we determine will be the best fit for our Louisville gardens.

Perennials
2011 PERENNIAL OF THE YEAR—
Amsonia hubrectii

Arkansas Blue Star (Amsonia hubrichtii) has been named the Perennial Plant of the Year by the Perennial Plant Association, a trade organization established to promote the use and sale of herbaceous perennials. The outstanding characteristics of Arkansas Blue Star include its ability to grow in a large part of the country, its attractive blue flowers in spring, and outstanding golden-yellow color of the foliage in the fall.

Herbs
2011 HERB OF THE YEAR—
Horseradish

It’s a botanical superhero, able to clear sinuses, boost the flavor of sauces and provide lush vegetation in a single bound. Its versatility and under-appreciated ubiquity make horseradish a perfect candidate for the International Herb Association’s Herb of the Year.

In Herbs, Spices and Flavorings (Overlook, 2000), Tom Stobart describes the flavor of horseradish as exceedingly pungent and “apt to run up the nose,”  a description that fairly well describes its path. The direct opposite of “slow burn,” horseradish races up your sinuses and instantly makes its presence known. This quality probably accounts for one of its folk names, “stingnose."
